If you’re a child with a food allergy, Halloween can be a pretty frustrating time. You most likely wouldn’t be spending your night going door to door with the chance of getting candy that could harm you. Seeing other kids able to go out with friends and family dressed up having a good time would make it even harder if you couldn’t do the same. That’s where the Teal Pumpkin Project comes in. It’s an initiative started by FARE, Food Allergy Research and Education. Launched as a national campaign in 2014, the Teal Pumpkin Project raises awareness of food allergies and helps to promote inclusion of all trick-or-treaters during Halloween.
The idea is to make Halloween inclusive for all children. By putting a teal coloured pumpkin in the door way of a home or business, it lets parents of kids know that you are a place where the child can pick up non food items.
FARE’s Teal Pumpkin Project helps to promote safety, inclusion and respect of individuals managing food allergies. All children should be able to have fun on Halloween night, by participating as a home or business, you help to encourage children who may feel otherwise Excluded.
This year, 100,000 households are pledging to participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project! Will you take the pledge?
Hotchkiss Home Firnishings on Prospect Street in Fredericton is the first business in Fredericton to officially join the movement. They will be giving away non food treat bags between now and Halloween, so make sure to stop in and pick up your treat bag! The idea was brought to the attention of Hotchkiss owner Chris Hotchkiss by his Events and Marketing Manger Samantha Tucker who’s family had been involved with the project last Halloween.
